Problem:

There is a need for continuing education to improve administrative and leadership skills of state Title V professionals working in key program positions, expressed by State Directors of Maternal and Child Health (MCH) and Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN) programs through several recent reports that have emphasized the importance of continuing education that provides a diverse group of participants the opportunity to exchange ideas, establish networks, and use realistic case-studies.

Goals and Objectives:

The MCHLSTI will offer continuing education to increase leadership skills for key management personnel in State Title V MCH and CSHCN programs in the US by annually offering two institutes on Planning, Implementing and Evaluating (PIE) Programs and two institutes on Systems to staff members of State Title V programs which address generic leadership and administrative skills topics. The goal will be also be supported by distance learning via the project website and by maintaining, updating and improving access to the History and Philosophy of MCH manual and the Glossary of MCH Terms and Acronyms.

Methodology:

Approximately four institutes are to be held annually for 30 participants each (approximately 120 total per year) at hotels with meeting room accommodations. The Institute pays travel and hotel costs and provides breakfast and lunch. State Title V Directors recommend applicants who are then selected on a first come-first served basis.

Coordination:

The Project Director in consultation with the Institute’s Curriculum Advisory Committee determines themes and topics of training. That Committee includes MCHB, AMCHP and a diverse group of other public and private MCH professionals and experts.

Evaluation:

Oral and written evaluations are conducted for every institute session, the results of which are reported annually to MCHB. Periodic follow-up surveys of participants and state Title V directors are conducted to evaluate the long-term utility of the training.
