Foreign Terrorist Organizations Designations (Compiled every 2 years) 1999: html format 1997: html format Under the statute, this report is subject to judicial review. The Secretary of State makes her designations following an exhaustive interagency effort. The designations expire in two years unless renewed. The law also allows groups to be added at any time following a decision by the Secretary, in consultation with the Attorney General and the Secretary of the Treasury. Designations can also be revoked if the Secretary determines that there are grounds for doing so and notifies Congress. Congress can also pass legislation to revoke designations.
Patterns of Global Terrorism This report is submitted in compliance with Title 22 of the United States Code, Section 2656f(a), which requires the Department of State to provide Congress a full and complete annual report on terrorism for those countries and groups meeting the criteria of Section (a)(1) and (2) of the Act. This publication is updated annually. Significant Incidents of Political Violence Against Americans This report is published annually by the Bureau of Diplomatic Security, Office of Intelligence and Threat Analysis (DS/DSS/ITA), which examines terrorism-related acts and other instances of violence affecting Americans. Some incidents may be omitted due to the sensitive nature of the information associated with them. The selection of incidents used is based upon: lethality, substantial property damage, use of unusual tactics or weapons, and perceptibility of targets as U.S. or representative of U.S. interests.
