Activities

The Partnership for Reading engages in a wide array of activities to build a common understanding about, and use of, evidence-based reading instructional strategies.

Sharing Reading Research Findings with Educators, Administrators, and Parents

Mailings to educators. The Partnership mails information about effective reading instruction strategies suggested by rigorous research such as those identified in the National Reading Panel's 2000 report, Teaching Children to Read. The goal is to familiarize educators with evidence-based research and provide a growing library to assist them as they make decisions about curriculum, instructional practice, and professional development opportunities. The Partnership targets mailings to a variety of school and district personnel, including reading curriculum specialists, teachers, principals, superintendents, and parent coordinators.

Mailings to states and organizations. The Partnership ensures that state education agency personnel, professional development and technical assistance providers throughout the country, and organizations that support and/or train teachers and administrators also are familiar with evidence-based reading research so they can support effective classroom reading instruction.

Creating Products That Make Reading Research Accessible

Products based on research. The Partnership develops print, video, and multi-media products that explain the research and connect it to classroom instruction and activities at home. For instance, The Partnership has produced a booklet for teachers and a brochure for parents, both called Put Reading First, based on the National Reading Panel's findings. Future products will include on-line resources to support teachers as they learn about the link between research and classroom practice.

The Partnership is also developing materials for adult reading instruction that use evidence-based principles and practices derived from K-12 and adult reading instruction research findings. There will be reports for researchers and adult educators, new adult reading resources on this web site, and workshop materials for adult basic education and teacher training.

The Partnership for Reading web site. This web site offers visitors a full range of resources to support the implementation of evidence-based reading strategies in schools and at home. It includes the nation's first comprehensive database of abstracts of reading studies that met the criteria of the National Reading Panel. More studies will be added regularly as The Partnership continues to monitor the reading research. In addition, the web site introduces visitors to print and multi-media resources on reading research and instruction, provides regular updates on new developments in legislation and program development, and offers an opportunity for educators to exchange experiences and practices related to reading instruction.

Bringing Scientific Evidence to Learning

Technical assistance to teachers and schools. The Partnership for Reading provides technical assistance to deliver information and support to educators throughout the country on the fundamentals of reading research and their implications for instructional practice.

Institutes and academies on reading research and instruction. The Partnership for Reading offers a series of national institutes and academies on reading research and instruction for teachers; school, district, and state administrators; teacher in-service educators; and others who are involved in the professional development of teachers of reading.

Contributing to Knowledge About Reading

The Partnership will help expand what we know about reading instruction by reviewing new quantitative research, identifying rigorous qualitative research, and funding studies of adult and adolescent reading. The Partnership will use the standards set by the National Reading Panel to survey new reading studies.
