Navigating Legal Issues in Archives by Menzi Behrnd-Klodt introduces and examines a variety of legal issues in the administration and management of collections. In Managing Congressional Collections, Cynthia Pease Miller addresses best practices for managing these unwieldy collections — from soliciting materials and working with a Congress member’s office through detailed processing guidelines to planning effective outreach activities. Both books were published by SAA in August and can be purchased online.

Call for Comments on Draft Guidelines for Archival Facilities

SAA's Task Force on Archival Facilities Guidelines has released its third draft document and is seeking comments and suggestions from members of the profession. The document, intended to assist the archival and building professions in planning new and remodeled structures, will be open for comments for 60 days. [Read more]

NHPRC Funding Bill Needs Senate Approval to Stay Alive

On July 10, 2008, the Senate Appropriations Committee is scheduled to markup the Financial Services and General Government fiscal year (FY) 2009 appropriations bill that includes funding for the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC). Recently approved by the House Appropriations Committee, the funding bill provides NHPRC with its highest funding level in five years: $10 million, plus $2 million for administrative costs. Help ensure the Senate does the same here.

NEH Division of Preservation and Access Faces Slashed Budget

In June, the budget for the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Division of Preservation and Access was cut by 45% by the House Appropriations Subcommittee on the Interior. The Division of Preservation and Access is the source for most of NEH's funding for archival projects. To support the call to action issued by Heritage Preservation, go here.

National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) Reauthorization

H.R. 5582 would reauthorize NHPRC at an annual level of $20 million for FY 2010–2014 — double the amount of the current authorization. For more information, go to http://historycoalition.org/?s=H.R.+5582.

PAHR“Preserving the American Historical Record” Act Introduced in House of Representatives!

May 14, 2008—H.R. 6056, new legislation to preserve the American historical record, was introduced in Congress today and referred to the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. You can help ensure its adoption! Read more.

The Artist-Museum Partnership Act (AMPA)

AMPA aims to allow artists, writers, and composers who donate works to museums and libraries to take a tax deduction equal to the fair market value of their work. SAA/ACA Joint Statement on Iraqi Records

Free Download of Archival Classic by Jenkinson

A digital version of the 1922 edition of A Manual of Archive Administration, Including the Problems of War Archives and Archive Making, by Sir Hilary Jenkinson, is available courtesy of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. This is perhaps the most famous work produced by British archivist and theorist Jenkinson, who speaks with great passion about many concerns that continue to reverberate today in the worldwide archival community. Get a Grant!

The Library of Congress and the Foundation Center have published “Foundation Grants for Preservation in Libraries, Archives, and Museums.” This guide lists 1,725 grants of $5,000 or more awarded by 474 foundations from 2003 through 2007. The publication includes hotlinks to free online grant writing tutorials, a statistical analysis of grant funding, state-by-state descriptions of projects funded in preservation, indexes of recipients, and a list of all foundations that have donated to preservation.
