The Carter Center Internship Program

The Carter Center is committed to waging peace, building hope, and fighting disease, and interns have the opportunity to work for Carter Center programs that contribute to this mission. Carter Center interns make vital contributions to the Center's work. In turn, The Carter Center provides a substantive learning experience that serves as a basis for interns to explore their career options and to develop professional skills. Internships are offered during three sessions per year to undergraduate juniors and seniors, graduate students, and recent graduates (graduated in the past 24 months). Prospective interns are those who have demonstrated superior academic ability and who have coursework, professional or personal experience, and career interests related to Carter Center programs. Interns are required to commit a minimum of 20 hours per week, although many choose to work up to 40 hours a week.

Our interns and graduate assistants provide a tremendous source of support to the Carter Center's peace programs, health programs, as well as the operation division of the Center. Students have the opportunity to intern in the following areas: Americas Program (AP), Democracy Program (DP), Conflict Resolution Program (CRP), Human Rights Program (HR), China Program (CP), Education Program (EDU), Global 2000 (G2000), Development (DEV), Art Services (ART), Finance (FIN), Research (RES), Special Events (SE), Public Information (PI), or the Mental Health Program (MH). The internship program focuses on providing interns with a substantive work experience and strictly enforces the policy of ensuring that less than 30 percent of their internship role is focused on administrative tasks. As such, interns are an integral part of the regular programmatic and operational activity of the institution: organizing conferences, preparing briefing materials for meetings, drafting memoranda and reports, attending meetings, and experiencing 'hands on' Center activities in the field, such as international election monitoring. The goal of the internship program is to advance a committed, informed, and skilled workforce serving peace, health, and development needs around the world.

Application Procedures

Many students receive academic credit for their internships through their university or college. Those who wish to receive academic credit should indicate so on the application and provide the internship supervisor's name and address within their institution/department. The necessary forms from the academic institution must be submitted upon acceptance to the program.

The relatively high number of interns accepted versus existing financial resources makes it difficult for the Center to provide stipends. However, we do have some need-based financial assistance available to selected candidates.

In order to accommodate the increasing numbers, intern applicants are asked to indicate, in order of preference, no more than two programs in which they would like to participate.

Applicants are also expected to assume responsibility for assuring that their application materials are postmarked by the deadline. The deadlines are:

FALL (late August—early December)—June 15

SPRING (mid January—early May)—Oct. 15

SUMMER (mid May—mid August)—March 1

Incomplete or late applications may not be given full consideration.

Once the deadline for a session has passed, applications are distributed to the appropriate programs for consideration. Program staff will contact a short list of applicants for phone interviews within a few weeks. When final selections have been made, all applicants will be notified. Recognizing the need of some applicants to apply for funding or to make alternative plans, program staff strive to complete the process within a month.

The Carter Center is dedicated to ensuring a relationship of mutual benefit with its interns. To that end, we welcome your application and any further questions you may have. The following links provide additional program information.
