Who We Are
The Firearms and Explosives Imports Branch (FEIB) is a U.S. Department of Justice entity under the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). We are directly responsible for processing and approving applications for the importation of a variety of firearms, ammunition, explosives, and implements of war for persons and for businesses wishing to import such materials into the United States. Through our dedicated team effort and continued consideration of marketing and technological trends worldwide, we guarantee to provide you with quality service.
Our Customers
The FEIB has a variety of direct customers, each with specific service needs. They include:

• Domestic and international law enforcement
• ATF regulatory and criminal enforcement personnel
• Other federal, state, and local government agencies
• Foreign embassies and foreign nationals
What We Do:
We process and approve the following required importation forms:
- ATF Form 6, Part 1, “Application and Permit for Importation of Firearms, Ammunition and Implements of War” - for all Federal firearms licensees, resident individuals who are United States citizens, and permanent resident aliens.
- ATF Form 6, Part II, “Application and Permit for Importation of Firearms, Ammunition and Implements of War” – for all military personnel applying for importation approval of personal firearms and ammunition prior to their return date from overseas assignment.
- ATF Form 6NIA, “Application/Permit for Temporary Importation of Firearms and Ammunition by Nonimmigrant Aliens” – for nonimmigrant aliens temporarily bringing firearms and ammunition into the United States for legitimate hunting or lawful sporting purposes.
- ATF Form 4587, “Application to Register as an Importer of U.S. Munitions Import List Articles” – for registration of persons dealing in articles enumerated on the U.S. Munitions Import List.
- ATF Form 4522, “International Import Certificate” – for importers to certify the legality of importation of articles enumerated on the U.S. Munitions Import List when required by certain foreign countries.In addition, we provide technical advice and assistance to the general public regarding requirements to register any firearm that they are bringing into the United States from a foreign country.
Our Service Commitment To You
You have the right to expect professional, prompt, and courteous service when you need our assistance in helping complete importation forms. A correct ATF Form 6 will be processed in four to six weeks from the date of receipt. Military personnel returning from overseas are reminded to plan ahead for mailing your application(s) in order to meet your return date. If we are unable to process your application because of incomplete or inaccurate information, we will return the application for corrections within 10 working days.Questions concerning the status of your importation application can be answered by calling us directly. If the specialist or examiner assigned to your application is not available at the time you call, we will respond by close of business the next working day.We will respond to your written correspondence within 21 calendar days of its receipt. However, should we need additional time to research your questions(s), we will notify you by phone or in writing and provide you with an approximate response date.
