National Flagship Language Program

Boren Scholarships and Fellowships

Each year, more than 200 of this nation’s most motivated and accomplished college and university students fan out across the globe as Boren Scholars (undergraduates) and Boren Fellows (graduate students).  They study languages that few Americans have mastered, and they visit parts of the world we need to understand in order to enhance U.S. security.

Boren Scholarships and Boren Fellowships offer a chance for study in nearly every world region, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America & the Caribbean, and the Middle East. Only the countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.

National Flagship Language Program

Current or prospective graduate students at an advanced stage of language study (in Arabic, Korean, Mandarin, Persian, Russian, Hindi or Central Asian languages) may want to investigate the National Flagship Language Program.

Boren Scholarships, Boren Fellowships, and the National Flagship Language Program are funded by the National Security Education Program and administered by the Institute of International Education. See About Us.
