"The Office of the US Trade Representative and the Department of Agriculture
today announced that the United States and India have resolved long-standing
issues regarding potential pests and diseases and agreed on a framework
outlining fundamental requirements for bilateral trade of commodities treated by
irradiation. This provides a road map for importation of mangoes into the United
States.
"The Agreement, signed by the USDA and the Indian Department of Agriculture
and Cooperation, now sets in motion bilateral procedures that should permit
mangoes to be sold in U.S. markets in as few as 18 months. This effectively
resolves a 17-year trade issue between the two countries."
