Deputy Secretary Raymond Simon plays a pivotal role in overseeing and managing the development of policies, recommendations and initiatives that help define a broad, coherent vision for achieving the President's education priorities, especially the No Child Left Behind Act.

The Deputy Secretary focuses on K-12 policy: No Child Left Behind, the High School Initiative, and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The Office of the Deputy Secretary coordinates the work of the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education (OESE), the Office of Innovation and Improvement (OII), the Office of English Language Acquisition (OELA), the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS), and the Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools (OSDFS).

The Deputy Secretary also oversees the Department's LEP Partnership, the Office for Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization, and the Department's partnership with The History Channel.
