Dr. Leonard K. Peters Named Director of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
RICHLAND, Wash. — Battelle announced today the selection of Dr. Leonard K. Peters as Director of the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.
Dr. Peters, who will begin his duties on April 1, joins Pacific Northwest after years of outstanding service in research — most recently as Vice Provost for Research at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
“We believe that Dr. Peters’ science and technology credentials, experience in leading diverse research programs, and community service record are a great match for the Laboratory and its future direction,” said Carl F. Kohrt, Battelle President and CEO. “I know that Dr. Peters will place a very high priority on excellence in science, laboratory management, and community involvement.”
“We are very excited that Dr. Peters will be joining Pacific Northwest National Laboratory,” said Dr. Raymond L. Orbach, director of DOE’s Office of Science. “He has a strong track record in science and technology and is a proven innovator in research and public-private partnerships. Just as important, he has been nationally recognized for his science and community service innovations at the state and local level.”
Since 1993, Dr. Peters has managed Virginia Tech’s diverse $230 million research program, ranging from biotechnology and materials to transportation and information technology. In addition to his accomplishments as a research manager, Dr. Peters has had a notable career as a researcher in atmospheric chemistry, including assignments with Alcoa Research Laboratories and an 18-month assignment at Pacific Northwest in the early 1990s. His commitment to community service resulted in a 1990 National Science Foundation Award for contributions to science and technology at the state and local level.
Dr. Peters earned his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh in Chemical Engineering.
“I am very excited and proud to be joining a Laboratory of Pacific Northwest’s great stature,” said Dr. Peters. “Its top-flight staff and capabilities in fundamental science, applied science, energy, environment, and national security are tremendous. And, given the fact that I once worked at the Laboratory on an 18-month assignment, I already have a great appreciation for the Lab and its staff.”
The DOE’s Office of Science is the steward of 10 laboratories in the national laboratory system, including Pacific Northwest. Battelle operates the laboratory for DOE.
Pacific Northwest employs more than 3,800 staff and has an annual budget of $550 million. The Laboratory’s focus is on providing science-based solutions to DOE’s missions of supplying energy, resolving the environmental legacy of weapons production, and ensuring national security.
Battelle focuses on technology development, technology commercialization and laboratory management. Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, Battelle, and the national labs it manages or co-manages, have 16,000 staff members and conduct more than $2 billion in annual research and development. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is a DOE research facility and delivers breakthrough science and technology in the areas of environment, energy, health, fundamental sciences and national security. Battelle has operated PNNL for the DOE since its inception in 1965.
