Unnamed Luna (Ye-1A/5):
This was the Soviet Union's fifth attempt at a lunar impact. The spacecraft was equipped with improved sensors as a result of data sent back by Luna 1 and Pioneer 4.

The spacecraft had to be destroyed by ground controllers after a gyroscope failed on the booster rocket 153 seconds after launch.

The launch was delayed for two days after the upper stage was accidentally filled with wrong fuel. Failed Soviet missions often were not given names. Cold war tensions were increasing between the Soviet Union and the U.S. as both nations launched ambitious lunar exploration efforts.
