Narrator says:
The new Issaquah Highlands Park-and-Ride garage will open for business
starting Monday, February 13th. The five story garage has 1,000 parking
stalls and space to park another 108 bicycles. The $26.6 million project
is a joint venture between King County Metro Transit, Sound Transit and
the Federal Transit Administration. At a brief dedication
ceremony, King County executive Ron Sims talked about the growth in
commuter options being offered on the Eastside.
Ron Sims/King County Executive says:
Including the Issaquah Highlands Park-and-Ride garage, King County and
Sound Transit will add 2,500 new park and ride spaces into the regional
system just during this month alone. Just think about how many
cars that takes off our overloaded roads and highway system everyday.
Fred Butler/ Sound Transit Board Member says:
With an established fast and reliable connection in place, Sound
Transit and King County Metro can add service. King County Metro
will start the new Route 218 with the opening of this facility. In
addition in June, Sound Transit will expand Route 554 to run on
weekends. Also in June, new service will be added to the Issaquah
Highlands by Sound Transit Express Route 555 with service to Northgate.
Regional transportation is something that communities all over the Puget
Sound are recognizing the need for.
Narrator says:
The new park-and-ride garage is located in the "Town Center" of the
Issaquah Highlands development and is expected to be used by
residents in all the surrounding communities. Issaquah Mayor Ava
Frisinger says this new transit option is an environmentally smart
choice.
Ava Frisinger/Issaquah Mayor says:
By getting out of our cars and riding the bus, not only do we reduce
traffic congestion on our streets and on I-90, but it helps us reduce
air pollution, traffic congestion, it uses our roads and highways more
efficiently and it reduces our energy consumption.
Narrator says:
One of the more visually interesting aspects of the garage is the
artwork on the north and west walls. Artist Ned Kahn calls it the
"glacial facade," thousands of small metal squares that flutter in the
wind give the walls a life of their own.
