BFRL Staff Profiles / Fire Research Division

			Mr. Cleary leads the fire detection research activities in the Fire Sensing and Extinguishment Group. Current activites include developing the Fire Emulator/Detector Evaluator as a tool for assessing single and multi-sensor detector performance and aircraft cargo compartment fire detection research. Mr. Cleary first came to NIST in 1987 as a guest researcher in the Smoke Dynamics Group where he worked on characterization of smoke aerodynamic properties and size distributions. He joined the Combustion and Flammability Group in 1989. He has worked on measuring flammability properties of solid materials and modeling of flame spread and fire growth. He has conducted experiments and modeled two-phase pipe flow of halon alternatives. He has worked on aicraft engine nacelle fire suppression and helped develop simple models for agent delivery requirements. He is currently involved in research on post-collision motor vehicle fires. Mr. Cleary is a member of the America Institute of Chemical Engineers, and is active inthe NFPA's Technical Committee on Telecommunications.
