Weather Outlook for Monday

Mon, 05 Jan 2009 05:10:02 EST
A frontal system extends from the Mid-Atlantic to the Central Gulf Coast. A wave along the front over the lower Rio Grande Valley will develop into a significant storm for roughly the eastern third of the country by Tuesday. The developing wave will move northeastward to the southern Ohio Valley by Tuesday evening, producing rain from Texas eastward to the southern Mid-Atlantic ON Monday with showers and thunderstorms mainly confined to the central gulf coast through Tuesday. A band of freezing rain and a little morning snow will develop over north central Texas on Monday and move into the Lower/Mid-Mississippi Valley by Monday evening. As the wave moves into the eastern Midwest, the band of freezing rain and morning snow will move mainly into parts of the Mid-Mississippi Valley. Freezing rain and sleet will develop over parts of the Mid-Atlantic through Tuesday, with snow over parts of the Great Lakes, northern Ohio Valley, and Northeast. Winter Weather

Developing winter storm over the Southern Plains will impact the Mid-Atlantic on Tuesday

Mon, 05 Jan 2009 05:27:35 EST
A strong mid/upper jet will send a stream of Pacific moisture across the Pacific Northwest and northern Great Basin/Northern Rockies. Most ranges east of the Cascades should remain cold enough for snow, with 1 foot amounts possible over the Washington Cascades and the terrain of northern Idaho. Over the Southern Plains, the developing wave will result in freezing rain developing over portions of north Texas and southeast Oklahoma into western and northern Arkansas. Models indicate that a quarter inch plus amounts of freezing rain are possible near the Dallas/Fort Worth and Little Rock areas through Tuesday morning. By Tuesday, a low will track west of the Appalachians from the Tennessee Valley to southern Ontario, resulting in a setup for widespread freezing rain and sleet from western Virginia and Maryland and eastern West Virginia through south central and into northeastern Pennsylvania.
