Oil Field Waste Pits Date Posted: August 30, 1999 Service contaminants staff gave a presentation on migratory bird mortality in oil field waste pits at a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Oil and Gas Conference at Casper, Wyoming on March 2, 1999. The meeting was attended by BLM petroleum engineers and technicians, oil industry representatives, and various other State and Federal agencies that regulate the oil and gas industry. Service staff discussed the problem of wildlife mortality in oil pits, solutions to the problem and the industry's response. In Colorado and Wyoming, the oil industry has made significant progress in eliminating or reducing the number of oil pits, and covering oil-covered pits with netting. The Service teamed up with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Region 8 to tackle the oil pit problem in Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Utah, North Dakota and South Dakota. The partnership has paid off in terms of achieving industry compliance with existing environmental regulations and a reduction in the threats to migratory birds and other wildlife.
