Integrated Pest Management for the Klamath Refuges Date Posted: December 22, 1999 The first comprehensive Integrated Pest Management Plan (IPM) for the national wildlife refuges system has been completed. The IPM plan covers the Lower Klamath and Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuges. An IPM approach incorporates biological and physical pest control methods, and considers pesticides only as a last resort. The centerpiece of the Klamath IPM plan is systematic, weekly crop inspections by each farmer. By detecting the presence of pests early, preventive methods less harmful to the environment can be attempted before infestation occurs and pesticides are needed. The Klamath Refuges' IPM Coordinator taught the first series of mandatory crop inspection classes for agricultural farmers who lease refuge land in February-April, 1999. The farmers obtained 20 hours of continuing education credit for their effort.
