Contaminant Investigation - U.S. Naval Air Station, Brunswick, Maine

Date Posted: August 8, 2007

The Service's Maine Field Office coordinated a Superfund fish tissue contaminant investigation at the U.S. Naval Air Station in Brunswick, Maine. The effort was funded by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Navy, and included personnel from our New England Field Office and New England Fishery Resource Office, the EPA and Navy contractors. Adult and juvenile brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) were collected by electrofishing from two reaches in Mere Brook - a reference reach and a reach beside three former U.S. Navy landfills. The brook passes under the runway at the Navy installation. Analytical results will be compared to a similar brook trout contaminant study conducted by our Maine Field Office in 1995. An EPA contractor will prepare the final report
