2001 Water Festival - Grand Junction, Colorado

Date Posted: October 2, 2001

The annual Children's Water Festival held at Mesa State College in Grand Junction, Colorado, on May 15 and 16 was a continued success this year. Grand Junction Environmental Contaminants (EC), Endangered Species (ES) and Fisheries staff cooperated in a presentation entitled モNative Verses Non-Native,ヤ educating fifth graders about native, non-native, and endangered Colorado River fish. EC and ES staff presented information to a total of 16, fifth-grade classes, reaching at least 320 students, parents, and teachers in two days. Staff discussed the effects that dams, non-native fish introduction, decreased river flows, and degraded water quality have on the native and endangered Colorado River fish. In addition, EC and ES staff had several native and non-native fish in 2 huge aquariums, and kids actually got to touch and hold fish, and モkiss a suckerヤ if they dared.
