Payment Options

• Credit card. We accept Visa, MasterCard, or American Express.
• Purchasing card. Purchasing cards are a type of credit card used by many corporations and institutions. Customers may submit one P-card reference number per order along with their credit card information. This reference number is used to track purchases with an internal billing code, which is itemized on your credit card statement.
• Purchase order. Purchase orders are only accepted by mail or fax. Please see our purchase order instructions for complete details.
• Check. Orders purchased with checks can only be accepted by mail. Please see our instructions for ordering by mail for complete details.

Ordering in Person

If you are in the Washington, DC, area, consider visiting our bookstore, which is conveniently located near several Metro stops. The bookstore carries our most popular books, but we do recommend calling ahead to make sure what you want is available.

Ordering Online

Buying books through our Web site is safe and secure. Plus, when you order a printed book online, you automatically receive a 10% discount off the list price. We only accept credit cards and purchasing cards for online orders. If you want to pay by check please read our instructions for ordering by mail. Customers paying by purchase order should read those specific instructions.

Online Security
All ordering information is SSL encrypted. Your personal information, including credit card data, is scrambled and coded as it passes over the Internet so that it cannot be pirated. We also have a firewall in place that further protects the data once it reaches our server.

Our track record is perfect. We've been taking orders over the Web since 1996 and we've never had an incident of credit card fraud associated with an order placed on the National Academies Press Web site. We have every expectation of maintaining that perfect record.

Ordering by Phone

You may phone in your order to our Customer Service Department. We can only accept credit card orders over the phone. If you want to pay by check or purchase order, place your order by mail or fax.

Ordering by Fax

Start by downloading and completing an order form[PDF]. If you are faxing a purchase order, please follow purchase order instructions.

• Faxes received before 3:00 p.m. EST will be processed and shipped the following business day.
• Faxes received after 3:00 p.m. EST will be processed and shipped in two business days.
• Business days are Monday through Friday. We are closed on most U.S. holidays.
• Completed order forms and purchase orders can be faxed to (202) 334-2451.

Ordering with a Purchase Order

We accept purchase orders from U.S. or Canadian companies or institutions. You do not have to pay in advance with a purchase order. We will ship your order and invoice you for the amount owed. You have thirty (30) days to remit full payment.

Purchase orders must be signed, bona fide documents that specify both a shipping and billing address; the preferred shipping method; and all relevant costs, including book prices, shipping and handling, and taxes. Requisitions, letters, faxes, or memoranda referencing a purchase order number will not be accepted.

Shipping and Handling Options
Purchase orders should allow for shipping as a prepay and add item, in other words, we add the shipping costs to your invoice for reimbursement.

Unless otherwise specified, books will be sent via our standard shipping and handling method, FedEx Ground. Learn more about shipping and handling options, transit time, and pricing.

If you require an expedited shipping method, such as FedEx Priority, please phone our Customer Service Department to determine whether your book is in stock and available for immediate shipment. Your purchase order will need to state the type of expedited shipping to be used, the deadline for receipt of the shipment, and that you accept all applicable charges incurred.

Applicable taxes
If your order is being shipped to any of the following locations, sales tax applies:

• California
• District of Columbia
• Florida
• Maryland
• Texas
• Canada (GST)

If you are exempt from the sales tax in your jurisdiction, please let us know by providing your tax exemption number in your purchase order and we will remove those charges.
