Photograph of Paul Stutzman   Mr. Stutzman operates the Building and Fire Research Laboratory's (BFRL) Microstructure Laboratory. This laboratory consists of a scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive x-ray analysis, computer image analyzer, light microscopy, and an automated x-ray powder diffractometer. The laboratory provides micro-analytical support on research projects conducted by personnel of BFRL. These projects include the micro-structural and chemical characterization of cement clinker, cement paste, cement paste/aggregate interfacial regions, high performance concrete, concrete, and mortar.

In 1992, Mr. Stutzman received the P. H. Bates Award for his outstanding paper, "Cement Clinker Characterization by Scanning Electron Microscopy." This paper was presented at the ASTM Symposium held on December 5, 1990 in San Antonio, Texas. The purpose of the symposium was to illustrate new methods and advances in established methods for the characterization of the hydraulic cement, and the application of these methods in cement manufacture. These methods were to aid in the understanding of the relationships between composition and performance, and may have an impact on standards and specifications relating to cement.

Mr. Stutzman is a member of ASTM, the Compositional Analysis Committee, and is Chairman of the Task Groups on Microscopy and Quantitative X-Ray Powder Diffraction Methods. He is also a member of the Microscopy Society of America and the American Ceramic Society.
