FOR RELEASE OCTOBER 8, 1997

FMC Chairman Harold J. Creel, Jr., announced today that the Commission has completed its five-year strategic plan as required by the Government Performance and Results Act of 1993. The plan identifies the FMC's mission for the foreseeable future, establishes specific strategic goals and outcome goals linked to achieving that mission, and specifies the means the Commission proposes to achieve its goals.

Chairman Creel stated: "This strategic plan should position the Commission to more effectively regulate U.S. oceanborne commerce, while being responsive to the legitimate needs of our stakeholders in all segments of the industry. Given the dynamic nature of the maritime industry, the Commission will be reassessing this plan periodically and modifying it as appropriate."

This strategic plan is available on the Commission's Internet Homepage (address: "www.fmc.gov"). Interested parties are encouraged to review the strategic plan and offer their comments. This can be accomplished in the normal course of interaction with agency staff, or by contacting a senior Commission official.
