PCPFS Mourns Longtime Physical
Activity Advocate
Dr.
Wynn Updyke, who spearheaded the administration of the
President's Challenge since 1987, passed away on Saturday,
March 22, 2003. Dr. Updyke was a kind, gentle and brilliant
man, who was always willing to roll up his sleeves and
assist the PCPFS on each and every request above and
beyond any written agreement. To the students at Indiana
University, he was a true mentor and guiding light who
encouraged young people to pursue professions in exercise
science and kinesiology. The PCPFS was proud to be present
at his retirement party several years ago and announce
the establishment of the Wynn Updyke scholarship fund
at IU for prospective students. The President's Challenge
has lost a great leader and advocate for physical activity
and fitness, but his contributions will live on. Dr.
Updyke was to receive his first-ever PCPFS award for
his momentous contributions to the program and youth
fitness on April 3rd in AAHPERD - an award that would
have meant so much to him.
