2007 King County Road Design and Construction Standards

The update to the 1993 King County Road and Design Standards has been approved. The 2007 Update includes new road design and construction requirements and practices, and complies with current storm water management, environmental policies, state and federal requirements, and the County's Comprehensive Plan.

Key elements of the update are:

  • Incorporates current design and construction standards.
  • Strengthens public safety requirements, includes additional sidewalk requirements, and places greater emphasis on replacement of utility structures within the right of way.
  • Strengthens requirements to reduce construction impacts on road users, including road closures, and detours.
  • Supports King County’s Comprehensive Plan, Critical Areas Code, Surface Water Manual, and applicable federal and state regulations.
  • Updates and clarifies Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.
  • Clarifies and modifies bikeways and equestrian standards.
  • Reinforces authority and duties of inspectors and quality control.
  • Reduces roadway width on local rural roads.
  • Improves street tree and landscaping criteria.
  • Includes provisions for low impact development.
  • Provides user-friendly document improvements and includes drawings illustrating many of the design requirements.
