Only Two Weeks Left to Apply for Disaster Assistance

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Nebraskans who were affected by the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding that swept the state from May 22 - June 24, 2008 have only two weeks left to apply for disaster aid. More than 2,400 applicants have registered to date and more than $3.4 million in grants and loans has been approved. The last day to register is Tuesday August 19, 2008.
Nebraska Emergency Management Agency and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) officials said anyone who had disaster losses should call FEMA's toll free number, 1-800-621-FEMA no later than August 19. People with hearing or speech impairments can call TTY 1-800-462-7585. Registration can also be done online at www.fema.gov/assistance.
Anyone who had disaster damages or losses can apply if they live, work, or have business operations in one of the federally declared counties of Buffalo, Butler, Colfax, Custer, Dawson, Douglas, Gage, Hamilton, Holt, Jefferson, Kearney, Lancaster, Platte, Richardson, Sarpy or Saunders.
"The registration process is quick and uncomplicated," said FEMA Federal Coordinating Officer Willie Nunn. "Operators with many language skills are available. We urge people not to hesitate to call so they don't miss out on getting help."
U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) applications for physical damage must also be completed and returned by August 19th.
FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
