Dissertations Initiative for the Advancement of Limnology and Oceanography (DIALOG)

Issue

Scientists at work

DIALOG was founded in 1993 to catalyze interactions and understanding across the full range of aquatic sciences, freshwater and salt, basic and applied. Recent Ph.D.'s are targeted to introduce new graduates to the community, forge lasting collegial bonds across peer groups and foster early career development.

Approach

Ph.D. Dissertation Registry – The DIALOG registry of Ph.D. dissertation abstracts encompasses all aquatic-science disciplines. Dissertation abstracts are archived on-line in a fully searchable format, providing a concise overview of the field and highlighting individual accomplishments.

Electronic Communication – Once registered with DIALOG, graduates are placed on an electronic distribution list to foster cross-institutional communication and disseminate job and other information of interest to recent graduates. Anyone may submit job and other announcements. Information is posted weekly. Submissions should be sent to dialog@whitman.edu. Brief summaries are encouraged, with web addresses for details. Please do not send attachments.

Symposium – DIALOG symposia provide an international forum where recent doctoral recipients can expand their scientific and professional outlook and forge lifelong, interdisciplinary collegial relationships with their peers. DIALOG VII will bring together 40 recent graduates from different fields, institutions and countries. Both oral and poster sessions will be used to highlight each participant's dissertation research and current interests. Agency representatives will describe interdisciplinary and international aquatic science research opportunities. Mentors will provide training to enhance early career development. While the format is intense, there will be time for informal collegial interactions. DIALOG VII is open to PhD's completed April 1, 2003 - March 31, 2005 in any subject within or relevant to the biologically oriented aquatic sciences. Selection will favor applicants who plan to engage in interdisciplinary aquatic science research. Graduates from all nations are eligible. A committee will select 40 participants based on the application materials submitted. Travel subsidies are available.

DIALOG is hosted and sponsored by the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO) and Whitman College. Other co-sponsoring institutions are:
