Tax Incentives for Energy Efficiency

Tax incentives are available for homeowners and businesses that purchase and install energy-efficient equipment or make energy efficiency improvements to existing or new homes and buildings. On this page you'll find links to information on tax incentives for residential and commercial buildings, including qualified software available for calculating commercial building tax deductions.

The Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPACT), which was signed into law by President Bush on August 8, 2005, provides tax credits for:

  • Commercial building energy efficiency improvements installed after December 31, 2005 and before January 1, 2009
  • Residential building energy efficiency improvements made after December 31, 2005 and before December 31, 2007

A summary of the Act's incentives, including consumer and commercial products that qualify for the new tax incentives and eligible building upgrades, can be found on DOE's Energy Policy Act of 2005 Tax Incentives Web site.

DOE also provides a list of qualified software that commercial building owners can use to calculate energy and power cost savings that meet federal tax incentive requirements.
