Tips for a successful search
How to use the King County search engine

Default search:

All words you type into the search box will be searched. This includes words such as "and" and "or" (commonly referred to as "operator" terms). Leaving these operator terms out of your search will retrieve documents that contain all, some, or even one of your search terms.

Multiple word searches:

For example, let's say you want the words "food" and "permit" to show up in all documents retrieved. Our search engine uses the " + " sign for this function, and it needs to be in front of each term. So if you wanted only those documents with both "food" and "permit", you would type this into the search box: +food +permit.

Multiple-word searches in particular order:

For example, let's say you want the words "food" and "permit" to show up, with "food" always in front of "permit" (ie. "food permit".) In this case where order matters, quotes need to be placed around the terms. For this "food" and "permit" example, here is what you would type into the search box: "food permit".

Q.
What's the difference between the Search Field and the green Search Button at the top of the page?
A.
The green search button that's located at the top of all King County websites will search for webpages throughout all of the King County websites producing multiple results which may not provide you with the info you need. The Search Field we provide you below the Public Health banner only searches within the Public Health website which helps to finetune your search.
Q.
I did a search for a page I've visited before but the results did not produce a link. What happened?
A.
We suggest using plain language to conduct your search or keywords most likely to be found on the webpage. If you're still having difficulty, contact us and we would be glad to assist you.
