Associate Director, Collection Resources

General Information: The University of Southern California (USC) Norris Medical Library seeks an innovative, energetic, and service–oriented individual to provide outstanding leadership for the library’s division of collection resources. In addition to collection development responsibilities, the successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating the library’s efforts in open access and scholarly communication issues including archiving and preservation, particularly for digital collections. The Norris Medical Library is an academic research library serving the schools and departments of medicine, pharmacy, occupational science, and biokinesiology/physical therapy. The library is strongly user focused and committed to providing faculty, students, and staff access to a wide variety of electronic information resources, including books, journals, bioinformatics tools, databases, evidence-based resources, and resources available via personal digital assistants. Responsibilities: Print book and journal collection development: Select appropriate books and journals for purchase, oversee approval plans, solicit and respond to faculty input, weed older materials, maintain awareness of current USC Health Sciences Campus programs and research priorities, and curate historical collections. Electronic book and journal collection development: Select appropriate electronic books and journals for purchase, and collaborate with head, Metadata and Content Management, in negotiating licenses for new electronic resources and in monitoring their use. Scholarly communication monitoring: Coordinate library’s efforts in open access and scholarly communication issues including archiving and preservation, particularly for digital collections. Financial oversight: Prepare and monitor collection budget of $2.8 million for print and electronic book, journal, and database purchases. Oversight of divisional operations: Work with head, Metadata and Content Management, to supervise staff, adjust work assignments, plan special projects, and plan and implement technical services automated systems. ILS administration: Supervise system use by library staff, plan and manage system upgrades, modify system parameters as needed, respond to staff requests for assistance, and produce management reports. Track ILS technology and developments including open source options. Serve on the senior management team assisting the director in library planning, management, and innovation. Prepare administrative and statistical reports for the director. Professional involvement: Assume leadership positions in local and national library organizations and contribute to publications and conferences.

Qualifications: MLS from an ALA-accredited library school and a minimum of 5 years’ experience, preferably in an academic health sciences library. Strong oral and written skills. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with culturally diverse library users and adult learners. Demonstrated creativity and initiative. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Intellectually curious and comfortable with change.

Salary:Beginning salary between $58,000–$80,000 depending on experience, plus an additional administrative stipend. Head, Metadata and Content Management

The University of Southern California (USC) Norris Medical Library seeks an innovative and dynamic librarian to provide leadership and expertise relating to acquiring, managing, and providing access to print and electronic resources for the Norris Medical Library and Wilson Dental Library. This position offers the opportunity to creatively apply emerging technologies to improve information access in support of the library’s mission. Norris Medical Library is located on the University of Southern California Health Sciences Campus in Los Angeles. The library contains 174,841 volumes and receives 846 current print periodicals and 2,425 current electronic journals. Users include medical, pharmacy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy students; 1,483 full-time faculty; and a large number of other health professionals. R esponsibilities : Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate 4 full-time staff and 1.1 FTE student workers. Oversee acquisition and management of electronic and print resources. Manager, Information Services

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will supervise a staff of up to 6 reference librarians and 3 support staff in providing delivery of reference services—which include, but are not limited to: mediated searching, implementing information delivery via the web, and providing educational support in the use of electronic resources that will be the principal information support for faculty, staff, and students—and to assist the academic departments in their educational endeavors as requested or necessary. Supervise reference section staff who provide a wide variety of traditional and nontraditional reference services in support of the college’s curriculum. Plan and schedule reference staff and educational duties and assignments, prepare performance evaluations of staff at scheduled intervals, and recommend continued employment. As requested, assist staff at Hamad or other hospitals with teaching information access principles and techniques. Initiate and supervise a structured program of continuing education for the reference staff through any of the following, but not limited to: professional association–sponsored events, commercially sponsored seminars and continuing education, lectures and demonstrations, and/or formal instruction at an appropriate educational venue. Required: Master’s degree in library and/or information science from an American Library Association–accredited school or equivalent with a minimum of 5 years’ professional library experience. Director and Chair, Department of Academic Information Services

The University of Mississippi Medical Center welcomes applications for the position of director of the Rowland Medical Library. This chair and director position oversees the planning, resource development, collections services, and outreach activities of the library. The Sirsi/Dynix–Horizon system is used to serve the schools of medicine, dentistry, nursing, health related professions, pharmacy and graduate studies in the health sciences. The collection holds 250,300 volumes and 1,536 current journal subscriptions and has access to 4,790 electronic full-text materials. The library staff includes 11 professional librarians and 13 technical staff members with an annual budget of approximately $4 million. The candidate will be responsible for providing strategic and visionary leadership for the development, delivery, and assessment of new services and programs and will provide professional guidance and direction during a time of transition to a more digital library environment. Additionally, the candidate must be able to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, academic deans, and medical center administration.

Required : ALA-accredited master’s degree or higher in library or information science, or equivalent combination of advanced degree and relevant library experience in an academic health sciences or medical library or a minimum of 5 years of administrative experience. Excellent leadership, project management ability, and communication skills are needed to articulate the library’s vision to both the medical center and broader community. The candidate must be flexible and possess a high comfort level with change. Evidence of national and regional participation in professional societies such as MLA or equivalent organizations is expected.

Preferred : Significant experience in medical library administration, operational experience in budgeting, collection development, and reference services; a strong user-centered commitment to public service and outreach; skills to identify sources of external funding for library projects; and commitment to diversity in the work and academic environment.
