Science Exchange Program with CERC and IBIW  Get Adobe Reader  CERC Fact Sheet

A survey of fish populations in the Rybinsk Reservoir, Yaroslavl, Russia, yields a catch of bream, Abramis spp.Since 1976, the USGS Columbia Environmental Research Center (CERC) and the Institute for Biology of Inland Waters (IBIW), Russian Academy of Sciences, Borok, Nekouz Region, Yaroslavl Oblast, Russia, have fostered and maintained a scientific exchange program.Signing the agreement to begin the science exchange program.

The initial impetus was a US-Soviet agreement on environmental protection in 1972, that was reaffirmed by a new US-Russian agreement signed by Vice President Gore and Prime Minister Chernomyrdin on June 23, 1994. Under the auspices of these agreements the CERC and IBIW continue this long-standing program of environmental research.

Although separated by approximately 5,160 miles, CERC and the IBIW in Borok, share a common research mission.

The IBIW was founded in 1938, on the shores of the Rybinsk Reservoir, as the Upper Volga Base of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In less than 30 years, the Institute evolved into a large scientific research institution contributing to the development of the theoretical basis for rational natural resource management through fundamental studies of freshwater ecosystems and aquatic biota. In addition to association with the Russian Academy of Sciences, IBIW is now also associated with the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Russia.

In the News Russian, Local Scientists Join Efforts (Columbia Missourian)

Canada
Lotek Wireless, Inc of Newmarket, Ontario, Canada and the USGS Columbia Environmental Research Center partnered together to sponsor a wildlife and fisheries telemetry training workshop in Columbia, Missouri. Lotek is a world and industry leader in the manufacture and application of telemetry equipment. USGS invited all interested state and federal collaborators within the Missouri River Basin. Both classroom and field activities were conducted during the four-day event. Lotek Wireless provided the onsite services of a product representative and two applications engineers to instruct individuals and groups in the principles of telemetry and the capabilities of the equipment currently in use. USGS provided facilities, equipment, computers, field application coordination and application expertise.

Chile
CERC Environmental Chemistry continues to provide technical assistance to colleagues in Chile. In 2005, CERC trained environmental toxicologists on methods for assessing Dioxins in fish and wildlife.

China
Invasive carp species. Exchanges with Chinese experts. CERC hosted large river fishes expert Dr. Yu at an Invasive Carp Symposium, August 2006. Environmental Chemistry conducted chemical analysis of the Asian Bighead Carp and provided the data to Dr. Yu.

European Union
CERC environmental chemists collaborated with chemists from UK/Ireland/Norway/Belgium/Netherlands/Germany/Italy/Spain/Norway/Denmark on methods for emerging contaminants. (Orazio, Peterman)

Mexico
CERC conducted field work in Veracruz, Mexico in collaboration with The Peregrine Fund, University of Chihuahua, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Dr. Diana Papoulias: CERC participates in the United States–Mexico Border Field Coordinating Committee (FCC) to identify and facilitate opportunities to communicate and coordinate at regional, state, and field levels between and among U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) bureaus and offices and between field and headquarters offices on border natural and cultural resource issues.

Norway, Lithuania, Sweden, Australia, and UK
CERC is conducting research with environmental chemists from these countries, development of methods for passive sampling of airborne and aquatic pollutants.

South Korea
CERC hosted a student from South Korea, in collaboration with the University of Missouri exchange program. Summer of 2006. The student participated in CERC science activities ranging from Chemistry, Ecology, Toxicology, and River Studies.

Trinidad-Tobago
CERC is collaborating with the University of the West Indies, T&T on aquatic and air pollution studies related to the rapidly growing chemical and petroleum industries. T&T environmental regulation is in the early stage of development and limited pollution studies have been conducted to assess extent and environmental impacts. Tourism is a major economy, and there is concern over environmental pollution. We hosted Dr. Azad Mohammed in 2006, provided training on analysis of persistent toxic chemicals. Azad plans to return to CERC in January 2007. In addition, we are working with Azad on the African Dust events which impact health, ecology, and potentially coral reefs.
