Following are links to sources used in this section and additional resources that relate to the past 10,000 years during which time human culture and civilizations have developed.

Inquiry

Following the last glacial maximum (LGM) about Image of North America at end of last glacial maximum18,000 years ago, ice caps and glaciers began to melt. Gradually, sea levels rose, and people from Asia migrated into North America. A number of "megafauna" (large animals) such as American Mastodon, Mammoths, and Saber-toothed Cats became extinct. Were people responsible for such extinctions?

Visit the Illinois State Museum to learn more about these changes.

  • How has the climate of the past 10,000 years related to the development of agriculture and civilizations?
  • What was going on in your region 10,000 years ago in terms of human development and climate change?

  • What are the major climate events of the past 10,000 years?

  • In the past 10,000 years, human population has grown from around 5 million to over 6 billion people. How many generations back did this occur?

  • The flooding of the Black Sea 7600 years ago may have played a role in the migration of the Indo-European proto-language. Did your ancestors come from that part of the world, and if so how many generations ago did this occur?
