The Albuquerque Fire Department has a wide variety of career opportunities available for individuals who have different interests, talents, and skills. Becoming a Fire Fighter

To be eligible for the Albuquerque Fire Department, applicants must be at least 21-years-old before the start of the cadet training program; have a high school diploma or GED; and possess a current, valid, and full (permanent) State of New Mexico Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) license at the basic level-or higher-as a minimum requirement. Applicants licensed as EMTs in other states can apply for reciprocity as an EMT-Basic in New Mexico (contact the NM Injury Prevention and EMS Bureau at (505) 476-7704). Local applicants may contact the EMS Academy at 272-5757 for further information on their different EMT-Basic training programs. Applicants must be United States citizens or legal residents. Those who successfully complete the written entrance examination and Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) are eligible for selection by the Fire Chief. Once selected, applicants must then pass a background investigation and a medical exam.

Training

The Albuquerque Fire Academy Cadet training program provides each recruit with the classroom knowledge and practical skills necessary to function as a fire fighter and within AFD Emergency Medical Technician protocols. After successfully completing training, each fire fighter is assigned to a fire suppression company for the completion of their probationary period before becoming a permanent member of the Department.
