The
Hazardous Materials Response team utilizes two task forces to heighten
the response capabilities for the City of Albuquerque, the County
of Bernalillo, and to act as a Regional Responder for the State
of New Mexico. Each task force includes an engine company, a ladder
company, a rescue company, and a hazardous materials response company.
As a regional responder, the AFD HazMat team is tasked with the
response to hazardous materials regional responses to incidents
occuring outside of the city limits within a fifty-mile radius.
The staffing levels are in compliance with OSHA regulations and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommendations. HazMat task force members participate in on-going training for certification to OSHA Level III Technician, in compliance with OSHA standard 1919.120. In addition, all other AFD fire fighters are trained to the OSHA Level II operations level. The training includes information gathering, chemical identification, scene isolation, spill and leak control, fire control tactics, and cost recovery. The teams also conduct site inspections of sites that store, use, and/or ship hazardous materials.
