Through the OSHA and CSDA Alliance, the organizations will work together to
provide the association's members and other sawing and drilling operators with information,
guidance, and access to training resources that will help them protect employees' health and safety.
OSHA and CSDA will focus on addressing workplace issues such as electrical safety, hearing
protection, and ladder and scaffold safety. The Alliance's goals include:
Outreach and communication:
- Work with OSHA to provide expertise in developing information on the recognition and prevention
of workplace hazards, and to provide expertise in developing ways of communicating such
information (e.g., print and electronic media, electronic assistance tools and OSHA’s and the
CSDA’s Web sites) to employers and employees in the construction industry.
- Share information among OSHA personnel and industry safety and health professionals regarding
CSDA’s best practices or effective approaches and publicize results through outreach by CSDA and
through OSHA- or CSDA-developed materials, training programs, workshops, seminars, and lectures
(or any other applicable forum).
Promoting the national dialogue on workplace safety and health:
- Convene or participate in forums, roundtable discussions, or stakeholder meetings on
construction-related issues to help forge innovative solutions in the workplace or to provide
input on safety and health issues.

- May 4-10, 2008:
2008 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week.
The OSHA and Concrete Sawing and Drilling Association Alliance and a number of other Alliance
Program participants supported 2008 NAOSH Week, "Safety is Good Business." Sponsored annually by
American Society of Safety Engineers and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, the Week
focuses on the importance of preventing injuries and illnesses in the workplace.
- April 7-11, 2008:
National Work Zone Awareness Week. The Week is held annually to bring
national attention to motorist and worker safety and mobility issues in work zones. The event is
sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration.
- March 4-8, 2008: 2008 CSDA Annual Convention, Red Rock Resort, Las Vegas, Nevada.
- March 7, 2008: Bill Parsons, Construction Safety Education Specialist, Directorate of
Construction, USDOL-OSHA, presented "OSHA Construction: Current Issues and Update."
- January 21-25, 2008: World of Concrete Conference and Trade Show 2008, Las Vegas, Nevada.
- OSHA Region IX, Nevada OSHA, and Nevada On-site Consultation staffed an exhibit booth during
the conference.
- January 22-26, 2007: World of Concrete 2007, Las Vegas, Nevada.
- OSHA Region IX, Nevada OSHA, and Nevada Consultation staffed an exhibit booth during the
conference.
- January 24, 2007: Stew Burkhammer, then-Director, Office of Construction Services, Directorate of
Construction, USDOL-OSHA, gave a presentation titled, "Outreach Programs for Construction" to 75
attendees.

Alliance Program Participant Developed Products
- CSDA Best Practices for Sawing and Drilling Operations: Highway Workzone Safety Checklist [PDF - 86 KB]. Through the OSHA and Concrete Sawing and Drilling Association (CSDA) Alliance, CSDA developed "CSDA Best Practices for Sawing and Drilling Operations: Highway Workzone Safety Checklist" The Checklist identifies hazards associated with sawing and cutting adjacent to a highway workzone and safe work practices to help reduce or eliminate the risk of injuries or illnesses. (2007, January)
- CSDA Best Practices for Sawing and Drilling Operations: Reducing Silica Exposure Fact Sheet [PDF - 88 KB]. Through the OSHA and Concrete Sawing and Drilling Association (CSDA) Alliance, CSDA developed "CSDA
Best Practices for Sawing and Drilling Operations: Reducing Silica Exposure
Fact Sheet." The Fact Sheet addresses best practices for reducing exposure to
airborne silica during concrete cutting, coring, drilling, quarrying and
brick/block operations. (2007, October)

- Concrete Openings, June 2006. CSDA's June 2006 edition of its monthly magazine includes an
article, "OSHA and CSDA Forge New Alliance," about the March 16, 2006 OSHA and CSDA Alliance
signing and the goals of the agreement. The magazine includes another article, "OSHA Offers New
Guidelines to Help Reduce Motor Vehicle Crashes," discussing OSHA's "Guidelines for Employers to
Reduce Motor Vehicle Crashes."
- CSDA News, August 2006. CSDA's August 2006 edition of its monthly newsletter includes an
article, "Phone Scams Threaten OSHA Fines," that describes an alleged phone scam in which people
claiming to be OSHA employees threaten companies with fines unless they purchase materials that
will put them into compliance with OSHA requirements.
- PDi Magazine, June-August 2006. PDi Magazine's June-August 2006 issue includes an article,
"CSDA/OSHA Alliance Provides Free Seminar at the World of Concrete in 2007" describing the
presentation "Outreach Programs for Construction" that Stew Burkhammer, then-Director, Office of
Construction Services, Directorate of Construction, USDOL-OSHA will deliver at the World of
Concrete 2007, January 22-26, 2007 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
