The truth, of course, is far different. Though some are largely forgotten by the American public, these men, whether in the country’s rough days as a frontier nation or as a nuclear superpower locked in cold war, breathed the rarefied air of the nation’s highest post, living in what was likely an exhilarating, and at times surreal, world.
