What follows is an edited version of the major captions that appear in the permanent galleries of the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library. The captions were written by Richard Norton Smith, Library Director from 1988 to 1993, as part of a full-scale renovation of the museum galleries in 1991-92. The captions were revised and edited by Timothy Walch, the former assistant director and now director of the Library, and Maureen Harding, the curator of exhibits at the Library.
