How to Apply

It's easy! Career intern opportunities are posted on our web site. Review the current openings and their locations. If you are interested and feel you meet our qualification requirements, follow the instructions on the recruiting bulletin about what you need to submit and where to send supporting documentation.

All career intern positions require submission of a resume and other supporting documentation. Consult the recruiting bulletin for details. In addition, depending on the nature of the position, you will either be required to complete an online self-assessment questionnaire or to submit written KSAO (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics) statements.

  • Our All About KSAOs publication provides useful tips for preparing KSAO statements.

Appointment and Conversion Process

If selected for a career internship, you will be appointed in the excepted service under the Schedule B authority found in part 302, Title 5 of the Code of Federal Regulations for a period not to exceed two years. Upon successful completion of the two-year internship program, and provided you meet all qualification, suitability, and performance requirements, you may be converted noncompetitively to a career or career-conditional appointment.

Most career intern positions will be offered with the understanding that you will remain at the sponsoring office location for assignment after completion of the program. However, some career intern positions will require you to be available for relocation to another National Archives office upon completion of the program. You should consult the recruiting bulletin to determine what, if any, relocation requirements the position carries.
