Laura Gilpin's photographs were acquired by the Library through purchase, gift, and copyright deposit. Use may be restricted.

Access: Permitted; subject to P&P policy on serving originals.

Reproduction (photocopying, hand-held camera copying, photoduplication and other forms of copying allowed by "fair use"): Permitted, subject to P&P policy on copying, which prohibits photocopying of the original photographs.

Publication and other forms of distribution: May be restricted.

  1. Images registered for copyright by Laura Gilpin are now in the public domain, as none of her copyrights were renewed. About half of the photographs in the Library's collection were received as copyright deposits.
  2. Photographs published (i.e., copied and distributed with the permission of the creator/copyright holder) prior to 1978 entered the public domain at the time of publication, unless accompanied by the proper notice of copyright.
  3. Images that were not published or copyrighted prior to 1978, are protected by copyright through 2049 (seventy years after Gilpin's death). The Amon Carter Museum (3501 Camp Bowie Blvd., Ft. Worth, Texas 76107-2695) has notified the Library that Gilpin transferred her existing copyrights to the Museum upon her death. While the Library of Congress has not substantiated this claim, patrons are advised that the Amon Carter Museum has expressed an interest in the use of Gilpins' photos.
