Rights and Restrictions Information

While the donor of the collection, Cowles Communications, Inc., dedicated to the public all rights it possessed in the collection, copyright to some photographs in this collection may be retained by the actual creators or their heirs. In an Instrument of Gift executed with the Library, Cowles has also expressed its intention to the Library that works not be used for "advertising or trade purposes." The Library cannot provide further interpretation of this phrase. Privacy and publicity rights may also apply.

Access: Permitted; subject to P&P policy on serving originals.

Reproduction (photocopying, hand-held camera copying, photoduplication and other forms of copying allowed by "fair use"): Permitted; subject to P&P policy on copying.

Publication and other forms of distribution: Restricted. The donor of the collection, Cowles Communications, Inc., has expressed its desire that photographs in the collection not be used for "advertising or trade purposes."

In addition, copyrights to photographs in the collection that were not produced as "work for hire" by LOOK staff photographers may be retained by the photographer or his/her heirs. Neither the donor nor the Library has been able to satisfactorily establish which works are in this category. Therefore, the Library recommends that patrons obtain permission from the creator agency, the photographer or the photographer's heirs before publishing or otherwise distributing images from the collection, except as allowed under "fair use."

The addresses of such parties, and an indication of the status of their works (to the extent known by the Library), are provided online on the Rights and Restrictions Information page under the photographer/agency name.
