    What is HERMS?

The Health Education Resource Management System (HERMS) computer program is a highly specialized time accounting system.  HERMS includes a daily encounter record system which is required for Service Unit Health Education staff.  It is also recommended for Tribal 638 Health Education Contracts.

HERMS allows health education providers to track time spent on tasks and programs. The HERMS program allows the entering and reporting of required data. Time-saving features make entering and reporting data quick and easy and health educators can also use the subsequent data that has been entered to instantly print-out charts and graphs that demonstrate the scope and activities of the Health Educator.

Health Educators (Providers) enter time spent either directly into the computer or on separate sheets of paper.  The program can extract and report on time spent by various Providers and on time spent on various program efforts.  This data system enables the IHS and tribal programs to collect and generate statistical data to address efficiency and effectiveness of health education services.  Data shows the number of hours Providers spend in providing services.  It indicates the time spent on specific programs and where these services were provided.

How can the HERMS program be used?

The HERMS program can be used solely as a paper and pencil form, but use of the software program allows more flexibility in data management and report production; as well as accountability.  The software is user-friendly.  However, it is recommended that Health Educators secure basic computer skills in Windows 95.

Example reports generated by the HERMS software.

The HERMS program can provide two types of reports. One is the data text report which can be printed from the HERMS program. This report can’t be copied to the clipboard. The second report is the graphic report. This report can be copied by the clipboard and added to a word processor program. Samples of what the graphic reports are shown below.  Click here to view two sample reports that the HERMS software can generate.
