Diseases |
Neoplastic (Spontaneous): |
- Mammary tumors in old females. (680)
Neoplastic (Induced): |
- 3-Methylcholanthrene induced brain tumors in only 3%. (404)
- In comparison with other inbred strains, DBA/2 is susceptible
to Bittner, Friend S and Friend B viruses, relatively susceptible
to Gross virus, and resistant
to Vaccinia virus. (370)
- Benzo(a)pyrene induced more fibrosarcomas in C3H mice than
in DBA/2 mice, and simultaneous application of 7, 8-benzoflavone
caused a greater increase
in tumor
incidence in C3H mice; however, 1, 1, 1-trichloropropene-2, 3-oxide plus
benzo(a)pyrene induced a higher incidence of fibrosarcomas in
DBA/2 mice. (781)
Non-Neoplastic (Spontaneous): |
- Intestinal volvulus in a small percentage. (140)
- Over 50% of males and females had dystrophic cardiac calcinosis
in the myocardium and/or epicardium. (160)
Non-Neoplastic (Induced): |
- Relatively resistant to infection by Plasmodium berghei. (492)
- Susceptible to infection with Leishmania tropica, but no clinical
signs of disease. (063)
Other Characteristics |
Immunologic: |
- High interferon induction by Newcastle disease virus. (696)
- Antibody response to single-stranded DNA is low and response
is controlled by an autosomal dominant gene regulated by sex
hormones. (571)
Biochemical: |
- Aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase increased only 20% by 3-methylcholanthrene.
The “nonresponsive” Ahd allele is present. (404,403)
- Gamma-aminobutyric acid binding was lower in DBA/2 than C57BL/6
cerebral cortex, hippocampus, striatum, and diencephalons. (739)
- Liver alcohol dehydrogenase activity is slightly lower, and
liver alhehyde dehydrogenase much lower than C57BL/6. (299)
- Morphine decreased acetylcholine turnover rate in cerebral cortex.
(561)
Physiologic: |
- Low plasma resting steroid levels, peak only briefly after
stress. (398)
Behavioral: |
- Quickly develops an aversion to ethanol. (299)
Misc: |
- Susceptible to audiogenic seizures; susceptibility begins at
12-17 days, peaks at 21 days, then gradually declines with age.
(646)
- Antithyroid drugs or radiothyroidectomy suppresses susceptibility
to audiogenic seizures. Suitable as a model for testing anticonvulsants.
(647, 421)
- Oral benzo(a)pyrene killed mice in 4 weeks due to pancytopenia.
(737)
- 3-Methylcholanthrene was less toxic to DBA/2N primordial oocytes
than to C57BL/6N oocytes. (447)
- More sensitive to toxic effects of chloroform than C57BL/6.
(097)
- More sensitive to analgesic action of morphine than C57BL/6.
