Horizontal positions are specified in geographic coordinates, that is, latitude and longitude. Latitudes are given to the nearest 1. Longitudes are given to the nearest 1. Latitude and longitude values are specified in Degrees, minutes, and decimal seconds.
The horizontal datum used is North American Datum of 1983.
The ellipsoid used is Geodetic Reference System 80.
The semi-major axis of the ellipsoid used is 6378137.
The flattening of the ellipsoid used is 1/298.257.

In 1995 the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) began a series of studies to monitor several major creeks and rivers that discharge freshwater into northeastern Florida Bay and the southwest coastal estuaries of Everglades National Park. These studies provide water flow, salinity, temperature, and water-level data for hydrodynamic model development and calibration and also supply baseline information for other physical, biological, and chemical studies being conducted in these areas. From 2004 through 2006 the Restoration, Coordination, and VERification program (RECOVER) Monitoring and Assessment Plan (MAP) funded 10 monitoring stations that together with the existing coastal monitoring network created a network of about 40 sites that could be analyzed for coastal gradients of flow, salinity, and nutrients. The purpose of this network is to gather information on the interactions between the Everglades mangrove transition zone and the freshwater wetlands.

Horizontal positions were established with the use of GPS equipment.
Not all stations have water quality data or are complete
Water-quality samples will be collected at three locations (West Highway Creek, Manatee Bay Creek, and Card Sound Canal) for determining the total and dissolved nutrient concentrations.
