Indian Health Manual F A Qs

Why are there no page numbers associated with the Chapters and Circulars in the Table of Contents?

The web-based construct relies on displaying a document or section by the user clicking on a link. Page numbering is not relevant with the web-based methods, nor does it allow for the flexibility to modify page order or divide longer pages into several pages as easily.

How do I know what's a link?

Some links can be discerned visually. Text links are generally underlined. Graphic links sometimes have a border around them. Most links will change the mouse cursor into a pointing hand. The links in the PDF documents are only revealed when your mouse cursor changes into a pointing hand. You will most easily find the links by running your mouse over the names of the sections you wish to view. Note that the open hand you may see when viewing a PDF document does not indicate a link. It allows you to move the page display up and down on the screen.

Why are some of the chapters listed in black and some in orange?

The IH Manual online site is a project in progress. The documents listed in black have not yet been added to the online system. Available documents are links that display as underlined. If a link has not been clicked on, it is blue. If the link has been visited, the link is red.

What is a PDF format?

PDF stands for Portable Document Format (PDF).  A PDF document displays a copy of a paper document that looks as similar to the original as possible. A PDF Reader is necessary to view PDF documents. Download the free PDF Reader Click here for additional HELP.

Can I search for a particular topic in the IH Manual?

Click on the binocular icon to open the search dialog box of a PDF document. Any match on your search string will highlight the match in the document. If you search a Table of Contents web page by clicking on the menu item "Edit", then "Find on Page", the match on the web page is highlighted.

Why do I see formatting problems in the PDF documents?

The quality of the original document affects the ability of the scanning and conversion software to render a faithful, PDF facsimile. Although the converted documents can be manually edited, it is not time, nor cost-effective to correct all formatting errors. All PDF's are currently being converted to to Hyper Text Markup Language (html) files.  This process is scheduled to be completed in 2008.

What is HTML?

Hyper Text Markup Language (html) is the language used for publishing to the world wide web.  It is composed of a set of elements that define a document and guide it's display.  HTML is much clearer to read, easier to access and can be used with a search engine.  With html there is no download time.

Why does it take some PDF documents a long time to display?

Information on the number of pages in a document and the size of the file is listed along with each document name in a table of contents. A few files are larger than 1000 KB, which take longer to download to your screen. Generally, these files contain many images. The slower your modem connection, the more noticeable the download time will be.

Why do some of the Circulars appear in italics?

When the title of the circular appears in italics, this means that it has been canceled or superseded.
