TRI-ME Reporting Software

Quick Links

The Toxics Release Inventory – Made Easy (TRI-ME) software page provides access to the software used by facilities to report their toxics release inventory data to EPA.  The TRI-ME software suite helps facilities in determining and completing their Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know (EPCRA) section 313 and Pollution Prevention Act (PPA) section 6607 obligations. TRI-MEweb and TRI-MEdesktop are both interactive, intelligent, user-friendly software tools that guides facilities through the TRI reporting experience.  This page also provides access to prior years’ reporting software.

What is TRI-MEweb?

TRI-Made Easy Web (TRI-MEweb) is a web-based application that you can access anywhere you have a connection to the internet. Unlike the desktop version of the TRI-ME software, TRI-MEweb requires no downloads or software installsThe preferred method to report to EPA is by the use of the TRI-Made Easy Web (TRI-MEweb) application. TRI-MEweb allows facilities to file a paperless report, significantly reduce data errors, and receive instant receipt confirmation of their submissions.   TRI-MEweb is similar to its predecessor TRI-MEdesktop in that it assists you in preparing your forms, but TRI-MEweb offers so much more, such as:

Facilities that use TRI-MEweb and reside in a state participating in the TRI State Data Exchange Exit EPA Disclaimer will have their forms sent simultaneously to EPA and their respective State officials via the Environmental Information Exchange Network. Once the TRI submission has been certified, your obligation to report to EPA and your state will be satisfied.

Please be aware that if your facility does not reside in a state participating in the TRI State Data Exchange, submitting via the internet does not satisfy your state reporting requirements for your facility. You must report to your state separately and in the required format specified by your state (i.e., diskette, paper, etc.).

If you have any questions about the TRI-MEweb submission process, please contact the CDX Hotline at epacdx@csc.com or call toll free: 1-888-890-1995.

What are the benefits of TRI-MEweb?

TRI-MEweb, unlike TRI-MEdesktop, does not require the download and installation of any software. It can be accessed from anywhere there is a connection to the internet. Furthermore, TRI-MEweb maintains several prior years of data for each facility, which means users will no longer have to maintain prior year data to load into the new software. In fact, each facility will have their prior reporting year forms loaded into the current reporting year automatically, which will save users time.

TRI-MEweb also has built in facility and chemical quicklists which allow users to skip entire sections of the TRI Form R that are not applicable to them. In TRI-MEdesktop, users had to repetitively enter in "NA" for each element in the section that didn't apply.

Another feature that is unique to TRI-MEweb is a built in Section 8 calculator. Facilities will automatically have their Section 8 data calculated for them based on what they entered in Sections 5 and 6.

In addition, TRI-MEweb has also incorporated Trend Reports that will compare current and prior year data to help facilities identify potential errors in reporting.

For more information, see the TRI-MEweb fact sheet (PDF). (2pp, 120KB, About PDF)

I prepare forms for my facility. How do I register for TRI-MEweb?

New TRI-MEweb users who will prepare forms will need to register with the Central Data Exchange (CDX) Once registered with CDX, the TRI-MEweb application will require an access key to associate the user with their facility. The access key will be sent by EPA via email or standard mail each year to the technical contact listed in the facility's prior year TRI reporting forms. Technical contacts may allow other users to access their facility's information by providing them with the access key.

For more information, please see the TRI-MEweb Registration Tutorial or the Tri-MEweb Registration Decision Tree.

What do I do if my technical contact from the previous year no longer works at my facility?

If your prior year technical contact no longer works at your facility, you may contact the CDX help desk at 1-888-890-1995 - option 1 - to obtain your facility's access code.

I certify forms for my facility. How do I register for TRI-MEweb?

Important: Please note that in order to use TRI-MEweb, certifying officials must register for the application in CDX. This registration requires the printing, completion, and mailing of an electronic signature agreement. Please allow adequate time for the mailing and processing of this form, which is estimated to take a minimum of 5 business days.

Certifiers may register for TRI-MEweb in two ways:

  1. A preparer for a facility may nominate a certifier. The certifier will then receive an email with instructions from CDX on what to do to register.
  2. A certifier may register at CDX directly.

For more information, please see the TRI-MEweb Registration Tutorial or the TRI-MEweb Registration Decision Tree.

What is TRI-MEdesktop?

TRI-MEdesktop is an predecessor of TRI-MEweb that requires the download of an application to a computer. The desktop version of the TRI-ME software is an interactive, intelligent, user friendly software tool that guides facilities through the TRI reporting experience. By leading prospective reporters through a series of logically ordered questions, TRI-MEdesktop streamlines the analysis needed to determine if a user must complete a Form R Report or Form A Certification Statement for a particular chemical. For those facilities required to report, the software provides the user with guidance for each data element on the reporting forms.

For the more experienced reporter, TRI-MEdesktop allows direct data entry onto electronic versions of the Form R and Form A Certification Statement. The application will check the data for common errors and then prepare the forms. All of the information contained in the Reporting Forms and Instructions book is contained within the application.

TRI-ME allows the user to submit the forms via the Internet through EPA's Central Data Exchange (CDX) or on diskette.

State Utility Software: UTIL RY2007

IMPORTANT UPDATE: The updated version of the RY 2007 UTIL Software is now available (May 27, 2008). The original RY 2007 UTIL software posted prior to May 27 did not have the ability to store the newly expanded Basis of Estimate codes that accompany quantity values in sections 5 and 6 of the form R. The revised copy, posted below for download, does now have this capability. If you have already downloaded and installed UTIL prior to May 27, please replace it with the copy below.

Can I Use the desktop version of TRI-ME software if I Have My Own TRI Software?

Yes. Some facilities have their own software or use private software to assist in preparing their TRI reports. This "third party software" is often designed to produce output files that match EPA's Magnetic Media File Formats (sometimes called the TRI 18 flat files). These file formats can be found below. You may load flat files created based on these formats directly into the TRI-MEdesktop software and then use the application to check your forms for common errors. You can then also use TRI-MEdesktop to submit the forms to U.S. EPA and your state.

What is the future of TRI-MEdesktop?

EPA considers TRI-MEweb to be the TRI reporting software of the future. Currently, EPA plans to offer TRI-MEdesktop software through the RY2008 reporting period and then discontinue the application.
