Oil Spill Recovery Institute (OSRI)
Established by Congress in response to the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill, the Oil Spill Recovery Institute (OSRI) in Cordova, Alaska works to identify and develop the best available techniques, equipment, and materials for responding to oil spills in the Arctic and sub-Arctic marine environment.
OSRI has four goals:
- Develop interdisciplinary understanding of Prince William Sound to better detect and predict spill-related impacts and subsequent recovery.
- Enhance the ability of oil spill responders to mitigate impacts of spills in Arctic and sub-Arctic marine environments.
- Educate the public on the issues of oil spill prevention, response, and impacts.
- Partner with other organizations to take advantage of pooled funding, facilities, knowledge, and experience.
