Selection Criteria Summary

We welcome suggestions for improvements of NWHIC, including recommendations of new resources. We do ask that you review our selection guidelines before e-mailing in a new URL for consideration. All requests for links must be accompanied by a completed "organizational interview" form which can be downloaded at the bottom of this page.

You can view the complete selection policy for NWHIC or the summary below:
The complete policy is available as a Word document (52K) and in PDF format (31K):

  • NWHIC is a gateway to selected consumer health and human services women's health information resources provided by U.S. government agencies and other organizations serving the public interest.

  • Publications and Organizations listed in NWHIC at a minimum should provide basic information on specific women's health topics. More detailed information is available from the primary information sources that NWHIC lists.

  • Organizations listed must be able to respond to information requests, whether via Internet or traditional means, from across the Nation.

  • Publications listed should be available to the public via the Internet, and by ordering (via fax or email) by NWHIC on the behalf of our 1-800 callers. It is preferred that publications are available by both means.

Resources for NWHIC are selected primarily from:

  • U.S. government agencies.
  • National voluntary, nonprofit, and professional organizations serving the public interest.
  • Universities, other educational institutions, and libraries.
  • State and local government agencies offering information services beyond their geographic boundaries.
  • Organizations partnering with government agencies to provide information to the public.

A limited number of commercially based organizations are included in NWHIC. These selected organizations generally provide free, consumer health information with limited advertising with the exception of selected published materials. These sites should not promote the sale of products or lobbying efforts. Selected published materials from these commercial sites include:

  • Online journals.
  • News web sites.
  • Large indexes of health and human services information provided free of charge as a public service by a commercial entity.
  • Free information services not available from any government entity.

Please Note: NWHIC does not endorse any specific product or service. Final selection and approval of resources is at the discretion of the Office on Women's Health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
