ITS Mission . . .
ITS provides assistance and support to all of NSSL in the areas of computing, data management, networking, outreach, technical support, Internet/Intranet Web pages, graphic resources and other support services.
COMPUTING
- Install and maintain system-level software and hardware, documentation and licenses for general-use systems
- Install and maintain basic software packages such as NCAR Graphics, IDL, IMSL, GEMPAK, etc. along with associated licenses and documentation
- Install and maintain desktop hardware and common-use software such as Netscape, Windows, NT, MacOS, Microsoft products, etc., along with associated licenses and documentation
- Install and maintain general-use graphic display systems
- Install, maintain and support administrative software
- Provide consulting when required as time permits
- **
DATA MANAGEMENT
- Provide data management plans for the Laboratory in general and individual projects
- Serve as point of contact for NSSL archived data sets
- Negotiate the acquisition of data streams from external organizations
- Identify data rescue initiatives to recover data from deteriorating media
- Define the scope of the Laboratory's data management problems and make recommendations on how to proceed
- Identify and design information systems to manage, access and visualize scientific data using the CODIAC data cataloguing system
- **
NETWORKING
- Continuously upgrade network infrastructure to be as fast, efficient, and reliable as possible
- Maintain a secure networking environment
- Administer all network connections for the laboratory
- **
OUTREACH
- Provide weekly public tours and group tours upon request, as time permits
- Publish NSSL Briefings quarterly newsletter
- Coordinate Open House and other special events
- Answer mail, email and phone calls from general public
- Create and disseminate educational material about severe weather
- Mentor high school and college students in research projects
TECHNICAL SUPPORT
- Maintain PC's running Windows or*nix operating systems and MacIntosh computers and printers
- Maintain network equipment and servers (excluding components already under a maintenance contract)
- Maintain all in-house electronic equipment (VCRs, televisions, projectors, lobby display, etc.)
- Maintain the telephone system, including FTS
- **
INTERNET/INTRANET
- Provide strong Internet presence for NSSL
- Provide comprehensive Intranet resource for lab personnel
- Provide web tools and instruction/guidance for creating web pages to lab personnel
- Answer and refer meteorological questions directed to the WebMaster
- Manage and assist in maintenance of web server workstation
GRAPHIC RESOURCES
- Provide general graphics services for purposes of publications, presentations and Web design
- Provide hardware support and software consulting for flatbed and film scanners.
ADDITIONAL SUPPORT AREAS
- Support special Lab field research projects as time and resources allow
- Plan and coordinate the integration of the NSSL's computing and network equipment into the new Nationl Weather Center building
