America's Health Care Hereos

Students

The NHSC has a number of exciting opportunities available for health professions students. Our programs offer dedicated individuals the chance to make a real difference in a community. And a rewarding and challenging career in primary health care is the greatest benefit of all.

  • NHSC Scholarships
Students dedicated to practicing primary care in communities of greatest need can compete for educational scholarships. In return for this scholarship support, they must agree to practice in communities across the Nation where need is the greatest.

  • SEARCH: Student/Resident Experiences and Rotations in Community Health
In cooperation with regional and State partners, the NHSC offers students and residents the opportunity to serve on interdisciplinary teams in medically underserved areas. Program details vary from State to State.

  • On Campus Ambassador Program
NHSC has identified faculty members on campuses across the country who serve as mentors for health professions students pursuing primary care careers focused on service to the underserved. Find a mentor at your school and learn more about NHSC Ambassadors.

  • Medical Spanish: Equipping Health Care Professionals to Serve Bilingual Communities

Many NHSC sites need staff who can serve bilingual communities. Medical Spanish training programs throughout the world offer a chance for immersion in a Spanish-speaking culture, learning the language through interaction. Many programs even include chances for clinical rotations conducted in Spanish, giving students the chance to practice classroom knowledge in nearby hospitals.

The opportunities available range from one week in California to six weeks in Costa Rica. Online courses are also available. For opportunities closer to home, colleges and universities are beginning to offer Medical Spanish, preparing medical professionals interested in practicing bilingual medicine. Most courses provide one-on-one instruction in the language and creative introductions to the culture.

More than 50 different opportunities are available in the U.S. and around the world.
