About
the NHSC Job Opportunities List
The NHSC Job Opportunities
List is a tool that connects NHSC community sites with qualified
clinicians. Approved sites that are currently hiring can reach
primary care, dental care, and mental health clinicians by posting
job opportunities on the list. These job opportunities are eligible
for fulfillment of the NHSC service obligation. However, these
job opportunities are open to all qualified clinicians
who are interested in serving the underserved. Scholars should
be aware that they are competing for these opportunities with
non-NHSC clinicians.
Are
You an NHSC Scholar (category HP)?
NHSC scholars
are required to serve their commitments in NHSC-approved sites
with the greatest need. Need is determined by using the Health
Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) designation score – the higher
the score, the higher the need. These scores are indicated on
the NHSC Job Opportunities List. More information about the HPSA
designations and scores.
NHSC scholars
in the Fiscal Year (FY) 2009 Placement Cycle must match to sites
with the following HPSA scores:
- primary
care physicians (family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology
or pediatrics) must match to a site with a primary care HPSA
score of 14 or higher;
- physician
assistants, family nurse practitioners and certified nurse-midwives
must match to a site with a primary care HPSA score of 14 or
higher;
- psychiatrists
must match to a mental health HPSA with a score of 19 or higher;
- dentists
must match to a dental HPSA with a score of 17 or higher.
To reiterate,
NHSC scholars must serve in NHSC-approved sites with HPSA scores
that meet the minimum levels stated above.
The identification
of NHSC approved practice sites is an ongoing process and the
Job Opportunities List is updated weekly. As job opportunities
are filled, however, there will be fewer positions from which
to choose. It is recommended that scholars apply to job opportunities
as early in the placement cycle as possible .Information about
the Scholars Program can be found in the Career
Information section
of the Scholar Resources section of the Web site. This site provides
valuable information about the scholars program including policies
and procedures, choosing a residency, selecting a practice site,
and links to other resources.
A Scholar
Orientation Conference is also offered to scholars entering
the placement cycle. The conference, held in the summer of each
year, provides information about matching scholars to NHSC approved
sites as well as a job fair. It also provides scholars with resources
to better prepare them for the site selection process and service
in the NHSC. Check the Scholar Program Resources web site for
more information.
Thank you
for your service to the Nation’s underserved.
Are
You Interested in the NHSC Loan Repayment Program (category LR)?
The National
Health Service Corps Loan Repayment Program (NHSC LRP) is a competitive
program that recruits fully training and licensed health professionals
to provide primary care, dental care, and mental health services
at NHSC-approved sites. In return, the NHSC LRP assists clinicians
with repayment of qualifying educational loans that are still
owed.
To be eligible,
a clinician must be fully trained, licensed and working at (or
in the final stages of employment negotiations with) an NHSC-approved
site. Job opportunities at NHSC-approved sites are posted on
the NHSC Job Opportunities List located above. Loan repayment
opportunities are listed as category LR. However, job opportunities
with a category of HP are also eligible for the Loan Repayment
Program.
While employment
at an eligible site is a requirement to qualify for the Loan Repayment
Program, it is not a guarantee of an award. Awards are granted
first to those clinicians serving at NHSC-approved sites with
the greatest need. NHSC-approved sites with less need are awarded
as resources allow.Need is determined by using the Health Professional
Shortage Area (HPSA) designation score - the higher the score,
the higher the need. These scores are indicated on the NHSC Job
Opportunities List. More information about HPSA
designations and scores .
