SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- Improving job safety and health for employees in the general industry sector is the goal of a new alliance forged by the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the American Industrial Hygiene Association-PR Local Section (AIHA-PR), the University of Puerto Rico's School of Public Health-Medical Sciences Campus (GSPH-MSC-UPR), and the Puerto Rico State OSHA (PR OSHA). The purpose of the alliance is to provide AIHA members and others with information, guidance, and training resources to protect employees' health and safety, particularly in reducing and preventing exposure to occupational health hazards relating to ergonomics, indoor air quality, noise, and airborne contaminants. Alliance members will work to develop and deliver training and education programs and safety and health curricula covering industrial hygiene issues. They will also seek to enhance the safety and health profession in Puerto Rico by delivering or arranging for delivery of Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and Certified Safety Professional (CSP) preparatory courses for AIHA members, safety and health professionals and students. "This alliance is an example of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's commitment to finding cooperative ways to improve health and safety for all employees," said Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's Regional Administrator for Region 2, which includes Puerto Rico. "This alliance will aid workers now and in the future by providing them with the knowledge to identify and correct hazards and by helping expand the number of certified safety and health professionals in Puerto Rico." The American Industrial Hygiene Association-PR Local Section is a non-for-profit organization founded in 1980, which is dedicated to promote, protect, and enhance industrial hygienists and other occupational health, safety and environmental professionals in their efforts to improve the health and well-being of workers, the community, and the environment. Signing the alliance were Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator; the Puerto Rico Federal OSHA area director, José A. Carpena; Rosa Pérez-Perdomo, Dean of the Graduate School of Public Health; Fernando Cordero, President of AIHA-PR Local Section; and José Droz, Assistant Secretary of the Puerto Rico State OSHA. The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has created more than 325 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace. Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees.
