New industry/government alliance seeks to enhance industry safety and reduce hazards PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Employers, employees and trainees in Rhode Island's construction industry are invited to a free meeting on Wednesday, September 3, at the New England Institute for Technology in Warwick, R.I., to learn about a new alliance to enhance safety and health. It will be the first of a series of free monthly meetings sponsored by Safety Alliance Furthering Educational Resources (SAFER), a joint effort between representatives of the construction industry and the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). At each meeting, members of the Rhode Island construction community will be able to network with safety professionals, learn how to control safety hazards, share lessons learned, exchange information, discuss OSHA regulations, and review local injury and illness trends. "Knowledge is the key to providing and ensuring a safe and healthful work environment," said Patrick Griffin, OSHA's area director for Rhode Island. "This meeting, and those to follow, will allow everyone in the state's construction community – small and large employers, their employees and trainees, safety and health professionals, and OSHA – to obtain and exchange vital safety information free of charge and in a cooperative setting." The September 3 kickoff meeting will feature an overview of the SAFER alliance; a panel discussion with representatives from the insurance industry, family-owned construction companies, occupational health providers and OSHA; and an open discussion that will provide attendees an opportunity to create agendas for future SAFER meetings. The meeting will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. EDT, with a continental breakfast available at 7:30. The location is 2500 Post Road, Hall of Fame Room (2nd floor). In fiscal year 2007, OSHA's Directorate of Training and Education, through its OSHA Training Institute Education Centers and Outreach Training Program, trained a total of 550,000 people. Specifically, there were 522,000 people trained in OSHA's Outreach Training 10-hour and 30-hour courses. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthy workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to promote the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
